The territory of modern Bangladesh, formerly known as East Bengal, from 1956 to 1971 was known as East Pakistan and was, consequently, under the Pakistani authorities.
The remoteness of the area from West Pakistan, as well as ethnic, linguistic, political and economic differences between the West and East Pakistan, motivated the latest upsurge of the national liberation movement, which led eventually to the declaration of independence of East Pakistan March 26, 1971.
The Pakistani government was not ready to give the inde
pendence of their inferior territory, so began the war of liberation. In this war, assistance to residents of East Pakistan, India has provided, and in the influential battle of December 16, 1971,, joint Bengali-Indian troops managed to inflict a crushing blow to the enemy's army, and thereby end the war in favor of the rebel forces. On the same day, it was decided to rename the East Pakistan into Bangladesh.
